Pancake Day, Jackson + Rye style!

Jackson and Rye in Soho, London

Jackson + Rye in Soho

It was Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) on Tuesday, March 4. So I NEEDED my pancake fix for the day. My friend and I set out on the hunt for pancakes. Now we knew, we weren’t the only ones looking to find THE place to have them. A little search by my friend brought us to Jackson+Rye. I had heard of the place and I’ve heard they do a good brunch too. But it didn’t occur to me that I should go check them out. The list is too long!!

Anyway, the usual culprits like The Breakfast Club (more hype IMO!) were fully booked up and queued up. Ain’t nobody got time for that! So, it was the perfect opportunity to check out a new place and see if they had pancakes. It’s an American-style diner so it HAD to do pancakes on Pancake Day at least, I don’t care about any other day. And YES! They were. Hurray! Our trip was already worth it.

It’s located right where Satsuma used to be in Soho. It looks really nice from the outside and I love the entrance. The place was busy but not spilling with people. We got seated in our booth. There were groups of people having lunch, chatting away and having a great time. We could not wait to get our hands on some food. We were starving!  So a quick graze through the menu and I decided on the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich where as my friend went for the Cheese Melt. We thought we should go big on the pancakes which is why I stayed away from the Mains!

I was expecting a sandwich to arrive, instead I got a burger! (1=stomach, 0= health kick, calorie count, self control, weight loss…) But you know what? It was Pancake Day! So it was all worth it. I don’t know what it is about buttermilk but it does make fried chicken taste so much better! It was a little greasy but then it was fried so what did I really expect? The chipotle mayo (another trendy condiment doing the rounds) was a great addition! I was trying so hard not to be full after eating my sandwich/burger as I wanted to eat pancakes.

Cheese melt- gooey goodness

My friend was feasting on the cheese melt and was loving it! So our plan of eating a ‘small’ main and pigging out on the pancakes did not really go to plan. But at this point, we didn’t care. The food was great and we were loving it! True to American-style diners, the portions were big. My friend couldn’t finish the cheese melt. But not because it wasn’t good, it was just too much and we still had to eat out pancakes.

So we made a compromise and ordered a portion of pancakes (3 in one portion) with chocolate sauce. While we were waiting, I looked around and do love to have a peak inside the ladies room πŸ˜› I just love the interior, there’s so much attention to detail and it’s brilliant to experience it. On our tables we had these huge pieces of paper that covered the whole table and in one corner you had the specials of the day (photo below) rather than craning your neck trying to see specials on a board and going blind in the process.

Brace yourself…So the moment we’d been waiting for finally arrived! The pancakes looked perfect- soft, fluffy and thick pancakes. Just as pancakes should be. None of that thin crepe-style excuse for a pancake. We were ooh-ing and aah-ing. This meal was worth every pound! I definitely want to come back and try some of their mains. Two men were sitting next to our table and he had a steak and eggs main. It looked so good that I was actually getting food envy. But their dessert was even better. One of them had an ice cream style dessert and a waitress poured hot chocolate over it…even though I was full, I still wanted to try that dessert. May be next time! πŸ˜› Too much pigging out for a day.

And what was the bill between us two? £21- a bargain! We walked out well-fed, happy and not too hard on the pocket either. Perfect meal for two!
